Using GPS to track young offenders?

The D.C. Division of Youth Rehabilitation Services is utilizing global positioning process devices to preserve track of young offenders released into the community.

The agency says it has contracted with Satellite Tracking of Folks LLC, the same corporation utilized by the city’s adult probation department, for the pilot program in which youth wear GPS devices on their ankles.

The program permits case managers to monitor regardless of whether youth beneath their supervision are participating in school and treatment programs as well as to enforce home arrest. Workers receive an e-mail alert if the juveniles violate their schedule or boundaries.

The move comes after nearly a dozen youth below the agency’s supervision have been charged with murder and extra than six have been killed.
